How Item Creation Works In Star Ocean: The Divine Force - TheGamer

kajasada.blogspot.com

As far back as the first game, fans of the Star Ocean series have fallen in love with the item creation system. It's exactly what it says on the tin — a gameplay mechanic involving the creation of items — but it frequently possesses a degree of depth one might not expect from what is, ultimately, a secondary aspect.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force boldly continues this beloved trend. Seven categories and hundreds of possibilities are all yours to experiment with. Will you be left with naught but Vile Goop for your efforts? Or is an all-powerful blade on your horizon?

What Is Item Creation?

Just a few hours into Star Ocean: The Divine Force's lengthy story, upon reaching the Seaport of Rythal for the first time, you will witness a cutscene starring series mascot Welch Vineyard at the docks. Say what you will about Welch, but she sure does leave an impression on people. She also drops a ring, triggering a side quest to deliver it to her in Delryk Village.

It just so happens that's where the story sends you next, so head over to the big building toward the back of Delryk Village with the massive finger sign. After a... bizarre sequence of events, Welch expresses her gratitude toward either Laeticia or Raymond (it depends on who you selected as the game's protagonist) by teaching them the art of Compounding.

This is the first of seven types of item creation in The Divine Force. Which is all well and good, but we still haven't answered the big question up in the section's header. What is item creation? How does it function? As it happens, we can solve this mystery as soon as Welch, in all her splendor, grants us the power of Compounding.

By selecting the newly-unlocked Item Creation tab on the main menu screen, you will be able to access any of the seven creation categories you can presently partake in. Within the category screen, you can select someone from your party to be the one who creates items. Note that they all have 'talents' you can view that can contribute to success within specific categories.

Two things to note here, by the way. First, you will unlock further Item Creation categories throughout the story, as Welch will reach out for another request at particular points. Always visit her when she asks you to, and voila.

Also, talents can be learned naturally through having characters engage in item creation. So, don't worry about Nina, for example, sometimes starting out with none. But do consider innate strengths, like Raymond's predisposition toward Smithery.

Item Creation Tips

We're going to stick with Compounding right now, since that's the item creation category that Star Ocean: The Divine Force lets players enjoy first. In Compounding, you must select two items to essentially mash together into a new one. Using Albaird for our example, note that the more you have him (or anyone else) use Compounding, the better they'll get.

That said, don't be surprised if you get a bunch of Vile Goops along the way. And, if something keeps giving you Goop, don't press the issue. It's very likely an inherently bad combination.

As you complete quests throughout the game, you will sometimes come across Secret Recipes that reveal the components necessary for various things. In Compounding's case, you might discover a Secret Recipe for Panacea Leaf + Game Meat, for example.

From what we have been able to discern, you can sell these Secret Recipes for a mint (10,000 Fol for this one!) if you think you can memorize these on your own. Heck, we're referencing this particular recipe precisely because there's a good chance you will have figured it out already.

Recognizing a character's aptitudes is vital to success with harder forms of item creation, though you can build aptitude to a degree through unlocking further talents. There may be specific talents that are wholly unique to characters, however, which would make them that much better-suited for particular categories. We're working to figure this bit out as we play through Star Ocean: The Divine Force.

How To Grind Your Item Creation Skills

Item creation isn't a one-and-done affair. Rather, to acquire more powerful equipment and lucrative inventory, you will be working from a multistep approach. This isn't always the case; sometimes, a Blueberry Potion is just a Blueberry Potion; but it can be especially true of, say, Smithery for example.

Consider Mithril, which can be processed through the Alchemy item creation category to several extents, including (ultimately) Moonstones. Moonstones are substantially more valuable than Mithril, but that makes Mithril a fundamentally impressive 'building block' toward bigger feats.

But merely tasking a character ranked Level One at Alchemy to make Moonstones from Mithril will seldom end well. Instead, you'll want to have them grind out their Alchemy level, ideally all the way to Level Ten, over time.

Grinding costs materials and Fol, and the better your outcome, the more experience your character will gain in a field; that said, it's often best, especially at lower levels, to sacrifice low-quality materials and small amounts of Fol, dozens of times in a row, so as not to go bankrupt in the process.

Why Item Creation Is Well Worth Your While

Trust us when we say that item creation can become your single best source of spectacular gear and other goodies. You can, with time and training, outclass anything Star Ocean: The Divine Force's merchants have in stock for you, eclipsing maximum weapon strength by hundreds and even thousands of points' worth of Attack, doing the same for Armor and Defense, and crafting consumable concoctions fit for the gods.

This takes effort. A whole lot of effort, if we're being honest, but only in relative terms. Getting from Point A to Point B in The Divine Force is as easy as following a map, and you can be done with it in 20 minutes of fairly linear movement. Reaching Level Ten in Authorship, an item creation category, is going to take far longer than 20 minutes.

But if you split up your grinding sessions, keep ample stock of middling (and thus, cheap) materials to grind with, and take it all in stride, you'll be on your way toward crafting late-game (and even mid-game!) materials into real treasures.
