Erie trustees discuss creation of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory board - Colorado Hometown Weekly

The Erie Board of Trustees is one step closer to creating a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee after the board discussed potential next steps.

In response to George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, the town hosted a virtual community discussion which allowed residents to share perspectives, ask questions and provide suggestions.

The town also participated in a Black Lives Matter march following the discussion.

In June, the trustees discussed actions the town should take to promote racial justice, diversity, equity and inclusion in Erie, and to continue the community discussions. During that same meeting, trustees also expressed interest in creating an Erie Police Department Directives Task Force, a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Advisory Board and a Youth Task Force.

Town staff have proposed different approaches to organize a youth advisory board, committee or task force.

During the July 14 meeting, the board agreed to make the Youth Advisory board more of an informal association which could allow youth in the town to make their own rules, operating expectations and goals.

Regarding the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Board, the trustees agreed it was time to create the board sooner rather than later.

“About three weeks ago, we stood in front of a 1,000-plus people in our town and talked about how this is a priority for us,” said Trustee Sara Loflin said.

According to the staff report, the town could create a small action team which would include community members, staff, and a trustee to create a clear purpose as well as create a Request for Proposal to find a facilitator which could coordinate community engagement.

The board agreed the facilitator would be beneficial to the town.

“I think we’re a community that’s becoming more diverse,” Harrison said. “I want our town to be one that’s going to be inclusive going forward, and strive to do that.”

According to Tuesday’s agenda, the board was scheduled to discuss implementing the action plan for the advisory board.

The police board is currently being formed.

Erie Police Chief Kim Stewart, Erie residents Justin Brooks and Mecca Scott, Loflin, Human Resources Director Alicia Melendez and other town staff are organizing a Community Task Force of nine people to review the police department’s directives and protocols.

According to the staff report, when the posting for the group closed on July 8, there were more than 50 applicants. This week, a panel has begun reviewing the applications and will make recommendations to the trustees on July 28

The first Task Force meeting will be at 7 p.m. July 29 at the police station.
