As businesses large and small are looking for ways to save every dollar they can while navigating the uncertain economic climate brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Post Office has announced a new program designed to help business customers cut costs.
The program is set to begin nationally on Wednesday, according to the USPS.
Business customers using Click-N-Ship will be able to earn up to $40 in credits for every $500 spent on Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express postage, the USPS said in a written statement.
“Existing business accounts will be auto-enrolled in the program,” the statement said. New customers can receive an additional $40 “Welcome Bonus” credit for the first $500 spent on Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express postage, and existing customers can redeem a one-time $20 bonus credit.
While the pandemic has created challenges for everyone, including the postal service, Pasadena Postmaster Tracy Jones said his staff remains dedicated to helping customers any whey they can.
In addition to the new loyalty program, along with discounts for direct mail advertising services, postal employees are trying to work around the needs of customers, he said.
“We’re definitely encouraging them to be as supportive and dedicated as they can be,” Jones said.
As an example, while USPS generally offers a 10-day grace period for late payment on P.O. boxes, the period has been extended to 30 days, and in some cases, longer, to help facilitate the needs of local businesses, he said. “We definitely want to make sure that we keep them moving.”
Since the onset of the pandemic, and the surge in electronic commerce that came with it as brick-and-mortar businesses were forced to close or limit operations, “Our parcel volume has spiked significantly,” Jones said.
At the same time, the postal service is affected by the same complications as everyone else, such as staffing issues.
But Jones said his staff is keenly aware that customers are depending on them, for everything from business transactions to receiving important medications.
“We’ll continue to make a concerted effort to make sure the community of Pasadena is receiving all the services they’ve come to expect,” Jones said. “We appreciate their patience.”
All six of Pasadena’s post offices have remained open during the pandemic, he said.
Pasadena Chamber of Commerce CEO Paul Little said he approved of the new loyalty discount program..
“Anything that helps businesses save money is very welcome,” he said.
“Our postal service is the mainstay of so much commerce and business communication that any opportunity to save money is greatly appreciated,” Little said. “I have to commend the USPS for stepping up and doing something to alleviate some of the costs associated with doing business while maintaining their position as the pre-eminent mail and package delivery service in the U.S.”
Additional benefits can be earned through a tiered system for businesses spending more than $10,000 on postage in calendar year 2020, according to USPS.

Postal officials are holding meetings via Zoom at 12 p.m. daily through Friday to discuss the program, as well as available discounts for the USPS’ Every Door Direct Mail program.
