SHERMAN — The Sherman Chamber of Commerce recently held a Scarecrow Creation Contest as a fundraiser in the month of October.
Competitors were given the chance to design their own scarecrow which were then displayed down Main Street in Sherman in front of the stores. Voting for the contest was held on the Sherman Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page from Oct 6 to Oct 20. The picture of the scarecrow that got the most likes by the end of the day on the 20th was the winner.
The Sherman Chamber of Commerce’s secretary, Laura Swanson was the one in charge of the contest.
“We basically gave them the stick form and the head and they had to create their own scarecrow,” Swanson said.
According to the Sherman Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page, the scarecrows were very popular in town and had a lot of people stopping by to take pictures with them.
The Sherman Central School Sculpture class and Studio Art classes both took part in the competition as well.
Eleven scarecrows were entered in all. The winning scarecrow was created by Laurie George, and she won a gift basket.
The Sherman Chamber of Commerce has done similar creation contest fundraisers in the past, including one earlier this year where people could decorate cows.
“We had about 52 cows entered in that competition,” Swanson said. “We will probably do more different things like this next year.”
Swanson said that fundraisers for the chamber such as the Scarecrow Creation Contest also helped to decorate and attract people to the town.
“We like to give people the opportunity to decorate the town and have fun,” Swanson said. “Come out to Sherman and check it out.”
