It is the contention of many, even many Christians that the days of creation had to have been much longer than 24-hour days. There are those that insist that the earth as we know it took millions, even billions of years to become what it is today. In this short article I will not attempt to argue with science or evolution (not that the arguments can’t be made). I will only be looking at this topic from a Bible believing point of view.
Many Bible believing people will note 2 Peter 3:8, “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day” and concede that the creation days could thus be a thousand years each. However, 2 Peter 3:8 taken in context has nothing at all to do with the time required to create the earth, in its context it is referring to the second coming of Christ and the day of judgment. In part this verse is telling us that God is not restricted in time as we are. If we take this idea of a day being a thousand years and follow it through to its logical end, we have questions that come up. If this is true then God would have rested for a thousand years after creating Adam and Eve. Scripture tells us that Adam lived some 930, was God resting for Adam’s entire life time? Since we see in scripture that God was in the garden with them it is clear that this is not the case.
Another question would be, how if a day is a thousand years, did the vegetation of Genesis 1:11 (day 3) which would need to be pollinated and have its seeds spread by birds and bees have survived without their symbiotic partners if they were created thousands of years later.
Speaking of plants, one of the arguments against the 24-hour day is that the earth brought forth vegetation… with seed in them (verse 12). The argument is that it takes more than a day for plants to mature. For the Bible believer let me ask this, how long did it take Jesus to create mature fish and the completely prepared bread when He fed the thousands? We must remember that God does not have the time restraints that we do.
In Genesis 1 the Hebrew word yom, our word ‘day’ was used of the days of creation. It is true that the word day both in Hebrew and English can mean more than one 24-hour day. When I speak to my teens I might say, “In my day”, which of course would be referring to my teenage years. But that is not how “day” is used in Genesis 1. In this chapter we see a “day” described this way, “and there was evening and there was morning”, each followed by which day of creation it was.
Morning and evening are one revolution of our planet earth, scripture plainly tells us that each day of creation was one 24-hour period. To claim that a day is anything else implies that either God does not know what He is saying or that He has been deceptive. As a Bible believer I will make no such implication.
