TAYLORVILLE — Construction for the First United Methodist Church Ministry Center continues and is actually well ahead schedule. The project began back in September 2021 when an All-Church Conference took place discussing the ambitious design. A financial plan was devised and approved directing First United Methodist to proceed with a $4,000,000 plus project which included Duncan Kendrick monies, Endowment funds, Cornerstone 1 fund drive, Future Cornerstone 2 fund drive and any loans if needed.

Waiting no time at all the Ground-Breaking ceremony was held the following year in March and actual construction for the project began in April. With the parking lot cleared and plenty of room it was time to start building.

The main part of the building will be home to 7-8 classrooms and meeting rooms, a state of the art kitchen for larger gatherings and plenty of entertainment (half-court basketball, portable stage and cinema quality projector). With so much room for activities it will make anyones head spin!

Progress can be seen daily outside and even inside the existing building itself. Both the Choir room and Nursery will be transformed into a Welcome Center and a highly secure Nursery. It is also where the bridge and ramp will connect the first floor of both buildings making it easily accessible for everyone who worships!

As with any large complex building project, surprise construction issues and resulting cost increases are common. This project is no exception. The crew experienced weather delays, a few surprises and some supply issues. However, so far, the project is going remarkably well and ahead of schedule. Initial timeline projections ranged for 18-24 months. As you can see by the picture *above*, they are well underway in less than 6 months and are now hoping for conclusion of the new building to come sometime in the first half of 2023!

“It’s really mixing the old with the new.” said First United Methodist Church representative Bob Febus. “We are limited only by our imagination.”
