WESTPORT, CT — Matt Balga, the Norwalk resident who was struck by a vehicle and killed in Westport Saturday night, is being remembered as a loyal and prideful man at the restaurant where he worked.
Balga, 54, was a chef at The Whelk restaurant in Westport, and he was struck while crossing Riverside Avenue near the restaurant at about 11:30 p.m. He was transported to the hospital where he died a short while later.
A makeshift memorial of flowers have been placed on Riverside Avenue across the street from the restaurant to honor Balga.
"We are terribly saddened by the loss of our friend and coworker Matt Balga," Andrea Dinan, manager of operations for the restaurant, told Patch in a statement.
Balga had been worked in the kitchens of For The Food LLC, the parent company that owns The Whelk, for the better part of 20 years, according to Dinan, so was well-known among the staff.
"He was loyal to a fault," Dinan said. "He took great pride in our restaurants and especially in being a part of our team."
In addition to The Whelk, For The Food also owns Kawa Ni and Don Memo, which are also in Westport.
"He was indeed one of a kind," Dinan said. "Our hearts are heavy right now, but in time our memories of him will give comfort and provide some good laughs. We are confident, Matteo would have it no other way."
