Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder has quietly become one of the best in the entire NBA at creating his own shot. In fact, when you break down his 22.9 points per game, nearly all of them are unassisted and are derived from his ability to create.
On the season, 86.4 percent Gilgeous-Alexander’s field goals have been unassisted, which is the second-highest rate in the NBA behind Markelle Fultz. This means that rather than playing off the ball and being set up for a bucket, he is making moves with the ball in his hands to find his own shot.
Furthermore, 67.8 percent of his 3-point shots have been unassisted, which is the fifth-highest of any player in the league. Rather than being a catch-and-shoot player from beyond the arc, Gilgeous-Alexander has shown the ability to make tough step back and pull-up threes. What’s most impressive is that he is shooting 41.0 percent from deep even with such a low percentage of assisted shots and a high level of difficulty.
When it comes to shots closer to the bucket, Gilgeous-Alexander’s craftiness really starts to show. On 2-point shots this season, 92.9 percent of his makes have been unassisted. He is one of the shiftiest players in the entire league and has an unexpected burst of quickness that allows him to blow by defenders to get to the rim. Many of his attempts around the basket are extremely difficult, but Gilgeous-Alexander has still managed to convert on 55.4 percent of his 2-point shots this season.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s 664 points this season is 33rd most in the NBA. However, his 445 unassisted points are the tenth most in the entire league. This just goes to show that when it comes to getting your team a bucket by yourself, Gilgeous-Alexander is among the best, especially when you consider how efficiently it’s being done with his shooting splits.
His unique style of play is extremely fun to watch. Even as explosive as Gilgeous-Alexander is on offense, you could argue that he is just scratching the surface on that end of the floor. Last season, playing off the ball with Chris Paul at point guard, he led the team in scoring. This season, being the primary ball handler and scoring a ton in isolation, he is leading the team once again.
As the Oklahoma City Thunder continue to build around Gilgeous-Alexander, he should only continue to get more efficient. If he were to be paired with another young star, defenses will only have more trouble slowing him down. Showing his ability to score on or off the ball throughout his career, the offensive ceiling for the young Thunder guard is extremely high.
