Overview
The story begins amidst the chaos when a random ship arrives on Atlas, Yet I can’t help but notice the interesting part being that the remains of the Grimm Whale that was recently blown to hell has its corpse just lying around which feels pretty damn ominous when you consider that in the world of RWBY, the Grimm usually disintegrates when they die. As Ironwood and the rest of the Ace-Ops wait for Penny, Winter decides to stay with Ironwood so the three can take on Qrow and Robyn who are supposedly still within the building and continuing to evade capture.
But just when you think things are going his way, Ironwood gets trolled by Emerald in the best way possible leading to one of the best fight scenes in this season so far with a satisfying outcome. Eventually, we see in a series of flashbacks show the events from the previous episode really played out as we quickly put the pieces together on what Ruby’s plan in combination with Winter, Marrow, Qrow, and Robyn actually entailed which intercepted the bomb from being transported was handled masterfully. Since the Atlas relic is known as the “Staff of Creation” needs to be extracted, they decide to use it to their advantage to resolve a few of their more recent problems that desperately require their attention such as Penny’s “virus” and the innocent civilians of both Atlas and Mantle who need to evacuation to Vacuo before Salem recovers and continues her murder-spree for the Relics themselves.
Of course with Oscar/Ozpin’s help, they are told that there’s a certain set of rules when interacting with the spirit within the Staff known as “Ambrosius” (Voiced by Valentine Stokes) that they need to follow leading to a legitimately thought-out plan on Whitley’s part. When meeting Ambrosius at the vault, he leaves quite a lasting impression and has quite a fun and sarcastic personality to boot. The girls explain their two-part plan which sort of ties up a few loose-ends (especially with Penny in a creative and unexpected way) but doesn’t completely succeed due to their communications being cut-off (presumably on the handy work of Watts) but as their solution comes to fruition the episode ends on an ominous note when Ambrosius says “Do Not Fall” when Ruby hopes they “thought of everything”…
Our Take
With such a thought-out plan, and with some suspenseful plot-threads have been resolved, it’s not completely over. Though I do give points for the creativity used in how this was handled with Penny in particular. As for the quick solution to help the people of Atlas and Mantle, I’m curious to see how this will help them get to Vacuo safely which raises more questions than answers. For starters, why would Ruby want everyone sent to Vacuo? There was no reason for it other than “this is where the plot goes next in Volume 9”. She could’ve sent the human refugees to Mistral and/or Vale, and the Faunus to Menagerie. She is actively putting millions of refugees at risk by taking them to Vacuo, a place she literally knows NOTHING about, that (according to the RWBY lore books) is more or less a barren, desert wasteland with oppressive heat and even more oppressive Grimm.
As for the fight with Ironwood, it was quite a sight to behold and beautifully cathartic, especially when Winter throws his ass in jail with Jacques. It’s a bit symbolic when you realize these two were both father figures to her and terrible people that she had to put behind bars and unlike Weiss who ordered her to transport their asses later for evacuation, she would’ve just left Jacques to die if Weiss didn’t say anything which speaks volumes on how much hate she has for their father. And the scene with Marrow putting a stop to all the Ace Ops in their fucking tracks. With one fucking word he neutralized his ENTIRE team INCLUDING Harriet the one chick we thought would be able to negate his Semblance by moving faster than he could slow down. These idiots have been joking and belittling Marrow the whole time for being silly and immature and idealistic, they clearly forgot he made it to this rank FOR A REASON.
But what really troubles me about this episode is how everything feels too easy. like this episode feels more like a calm before the storm than the previous episodes. And with the ominous foreboding cliffhanger involving Cinder’s Team and with two episodes left of Volume 8, it remains to be seen who will actually survive this and I’m hooked enough to keep watching!
