Cedarville University: Over the last weekend of January, 17 Cedarville students worked together to complete the Global Game Jam annual game-creation challenge. The challenge tasks students with creating an original high-tech video game in 48 hours, and Cedarville’s team collaborated to make five games within the allotted time, including Josiah Carpenter of Medina.
This year’s challenge had 20,000 participants from more than 100 countries, with a final game count totaling nearly 6,000. Global Game Jam selects a theme for the games, and this year, they chose “Lost and Found.”
All of the student participants were self-nominated, and of the 17 involved, Carpenter represented the Computer Science major. The students completed their five games from start to finish independent of faculty assistance.
Students retain ownership of their games after the competition, and they are free to publish them publicly or post them for sale. Cedarville’s students published their games for public play, and they are accessible at https://globalgamejam.org/2021/jam-sites/cedarville-university/games. In addition, the games students develop can be added to professional portfolios.

University of Mount Union: The Ohio Biological Survey’s annual Ohio Natural History Conference was held virtually in February and featured research from four University of Mount Union natural science students who participated in hands-on research with faculty. Carson Ciesinski, from Hinckley, was one of the students who were able to present their research at the conference.
Much of the research was conducted at Mount Union’s Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center and covered a variety of topics, ranging from Beech leaf disease, groundwater pollution, biodiversity’s impact on pond health, native bees and microplastic deposition.
“Presenting my work at the Ohio Natural History Conference let me meet one of the people behind the beech leaf disease research project to which we were contributing,” said student Emily Becker. “I got to speak to him during my presentation about our experience as citizen scientists and discuss where the research might go from there. He even mentioned one of the theories we came up with about how the disease is spreading during his own presentation on the topic!”
“We have been intentionally increasing the amount of student research conducted at the Nature Center-through the Brumbaugh Scholars program and independent studies,” said Dr. Chris Stanton, professor of biology and director of the Nature Center. “The students gain field research experience but also benefit from presenting at a scientific meeting and meeting other students and scientists in our region. The Ohio Natural History Conference is a comfortable, friendly venue for students to start their professional careers.”
Mount Union students and faculty have presented 10 research posters over the past three years alone.
