Black College Football Hall of Fame announces creation of HBCU Legacy Bowl - The Athletic

How did this come together?

Chris Vannini, college football staff writer: The Black College Football Hall of Fame was established in 2009 by former quarterbacks James "Shack" Harris and Doug Williams. The group has partnered with the NFL with an annual quarterback coaching summit and has provided scholarship money to HBCUs. The increase in awareness and attention on HBCU sports over the past year has created more opportunities — the only spring FCS games on linear television so far this season have involved Deion Sanders' Jackson State team. Now a new college all-star game will provide more opportunities for HBCU players.

Why this matters

Vannini: Some of the greatest football players of all time have come from HBCUs, like Jerry Rice from Mississippi Valley State, Walter Payton from Jackson State and Steve McNair from Alcorn State. Providing current players this opportunity will give them one more spotlight and hands-on experience they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. It could also help HBCUs in recruiting, by showing prospects there is a direct opportunity for a pro football showcase.
