Facebook is banning ads promoting weapon accessories and protective equipment in the United States from now until at least two days after U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, which will be held Jan. 20, according to a blog post from the social media giant.
The move is being made out of “an abundance of caution,” Facebook wrote.
“We already prohibit ads for weapons, ammunition and weapon enhancements like silencers,” the blog post from Saturday reads. “But we will now also prohibit ads for accessories such as gun safes, vests and gun holsters in the US.”
Facebook, on Friday, also said it is monitoring for “signals of violence” or other threats in Washington, D.C. and across the country.
The announcement comes in the wake of the Jan. 6 attacks on the U.S. Capitol when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building. Several people are now facing charges.
“In the lead up to Inauguration Day, we have implemented a series of additional measures to continue preventing attempts to use our services for violence,” Facebook said.
The company already paused all political advertising. Additional steps to prevent Facebook from being used to incite violence have been added, according to company blog posts.
Facebook said the additional measures are:
- Blocking the creation of any new Facebook events happening in close proximity to locations including the White House, the U.S. Capitol building and any of the state capitol buildings through Inauguration Day.
- Restriction of some features for people in the U.S. based on signals such as repeat violations of our policies. These restrictions include blocking these accounts from creating live videos or creating an event, group or page.
Facebook is also reviewing events listed on the site related to the inauguration and removing any that violate use policies. Facebook events for happenings in the U.S. will not be allowed to be created by non-U.S. based accounts.
All content containing the phrase “Stop the Steal” continues to be removed from Facebook and Instagram. The original “Stop the Steal” group was removed in November and pages continued to be pulled, Facebook said.
