KALAMAZOO, MI — Officials in Kalamazoo County are applauding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for remarks about Pfizer during her third State of the State address.

Whitmer mentioned the company during the speech Wednesday, Jan. 27, and called on lawmakers to pass Good Jobs for Michigan legislation to retain and grow our businesses and create jobs.

Pfizer was the first business to utilize Good Jobs for Michigan, Whitmer said, and did so to build their sterile drug manufacturing plant and create 450 good-paying jobs in Portage. The governor called on the legislature to pass Good Jobs for Michigan legislation to retain and grow our businesses and create jobs and said it would be good for families, businesses and the economy.

“We are so proud that Pfizer calls Portage home,” City Manager Joe La Margo said. “Portage and Kalamazoo County are a hub of innovation and creativity where ideas are hatched, and concepts are brought to life. The city of Portage commends Pfizer employees who have helped produce a safe and effective vaccine in record time – making history during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Pfizer is one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, and its largest manufacturing site where the company is producing the COVID-19 vaccine is in Portage. Pfizer employs about 2,500 people, the city of Portage said.

Recently seated state Rep. Christine Morse, D-Kalamazoo, issued a statement as well.

“Not only does Pfizer provide good paying jobs right here in the Kalamazoo area, but they have also made history by creating a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, which was produced by Michigan workers and distributed nationwide,” said Morse, who served as a Kalamazoo County commissioner prior to being elected state representative in 2020.

“I have immense pride in the role our community has played in providing a path to end this devastating pandemic, and I would like to join our governor in applauding Pfizer’s efforts,” she said.

Luann Dunsford, CEO of the Michigan Works! Association said the group is a member of the Good Jobs for Michigan coalition and a strong supporter of its mission of advancing economic development tools and efforts to strengthen Michigan and secure good-paying jobs for our families, community, and future.

State Sen. Aric Nesbitt, R-Lawton, issued a statement on Wednesday in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2021 State of the State address, expressing frustration with a lack of bipartisan cooperation.

“This is the third State of the State in which Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has outlined her plans and called on the Legislature to work with her, but her actions in recent years have shown she feels otherwise,” Nesbitt said. “She chose to go it alone on roads, she chose to redo the state budget as she saw fit and she has chosen to take on this pandemic alone.”

State Sen. Sean McCann, D-Kalamazoo, joined his Democratic colleagues in celebrating the work being done locally at Pfizer, also advocating in a statement for the Good Jobs for Michigan program.

“They say hindsight is 20/20, but it’s truly remarkable that in 2018, Pfizer had the extraordinary vision to be the first company to tap into the Good Jobs for Michigan program,” McCann said. “I couldn’t be prouder to see them as a worldwide leader today in the fight against the coronavirus with the production of the COVID-19 vaccine, and the efforts of hardworking Kalamazoo County residents who continue to build our way back to a healthier, safer future.”
