Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Paré are expected to announce the creation of a new Major position in the Providence Police Department. An email circulating from the City Council office stated that an announcement is scheduled for Friday afternoon regarding the new position, which will be tasked with overseeing the department's community relations/engagement division.
According to multiple sources, the position is intended to be filled by a minority candidate -- from either inside the department or outside.
There are currently four Major positions within the department.
Latest for Police
On Thursday, Elorza announced that he would be joining President of Providence FOP Lodge #3 Michael Imondi to sign a tentative contract agreement spanning a four-year term from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2023.
The pending contract requires officers to contribute an additional 5.5% of their salaries toward the city’s pension fund, totaling a 13.5% annual contribution.
In addition, the first three years of the contract provide 4.5% wage increases and the final year provides a 3.75% wage increase for all officers.
On Tuesday, the ACLU of Rhode Island said that repeated instances of police failing to activate their body cameras in high profile encounters with the public needs the establishment of "a more vigorous audit process, to hold officers responsible for violating the department’s body camera policy."
The ACLU called on Paré and Police Chief Hugh Clements, Jr. to take stronger steps.
