The Rings of Power May Have Shown Morgoth's Most Appalling Creation - CBR - Comic Book Resources

For a number of reasons, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 debuted to mixed reactions. From lore complaints to story and dialogue issues, a lot of The Lord of the Rings fans agreed that the series didn't quite live up to its hype. Some fans (like the Hobbit's Richard Armitage) refused to watch Rings of Power all together. Season 2 will look to right some of the series' wrongs, but it's already been hit with a number of production issues, including the decision to film during the WGA strike.

Between the production issues and Warner Bros. Discovery announcing its own Lord of the Rings films, The Rings of Power is looking for a way to right the ship. A lot of fans believe that the series can find an advantage in referencing material from The Silmarillion. Because of copyright issues, that's not technically possible, but The Rings of Power found a workaround Season 1 started off with a flashback that showed its interpretation of the First Age. Part of that flashback might have showed Rings of Power's interpretation of Morgoth's most appalling creation.

Galadriel mourns over an Elven helmet on The Rings of Power

Morgoth was a problem well before the Elves or Men awoke in Middle-earth. He warred with the Valar, was defeated and was taken back to Valinor in chains. After centuries of feigned penitence, Morgoth began anew. He recruited Ungoliant and destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor. In response, the controversial FĂ«anor vowed revenge. Against the will of the Valar, he led most of the Noldorian Elves on a quest to Middle-earth.

While the Noldor enjoyed some initial success against Morgoth, their efforts were doomed. There were five major battles, spaced out over six centuries, and in the final battle, the Elves were completely decimated. It was called the Nirnaeth Arnoediad (the Battle of Unnumbered Tears). When the battle was over, Morgoth had his Orcs make a monument to his victory by piling all the fallen Elven corpses into a great mound. It was a vile monument, and it proved that the Elves were destined to fail in the quest for revenge.

The mound was so large that it could be seen from afar. The Elves called it Haudh-en-Ndengin (the Hill of the Slain) or Haudh-en-Nirnaeth, (the Hill of Tears). However, The Silmarillion told how grass grew on the mound, which represented that even Morgoth would eventually be defeated and his most evil creations made right.

Did The Rings of Power Show the Hill of Tears?

The shadow of Morgoth looms over the Two Trees

The Rings of Power's flashback told of a deadly, centuries-long war with Morgoth. The flashback even showed Galadriel adding to a large mound of Elven helmets. At first glance, the pile of helmets wasn't big enough to be the Hill of Tears, but it was probably meant to be Rings of Power's interpretation of the awful monument. It's worth noting that the series doesn't have the rights to The Silmarillion. It therefore couldn't technically name the Hill of Tears or make a rendition that was too close to the Tolkien version. Thus, the pile of helmets was probably inspired by the Hill of Tears, even if it can't be directly correlated to it.

The Hill of Tears was probably Morgoth's most appalling creation, but it was far from the only evil thing that he created. The Rings of Power featured Adar, who was one of the Moriondor that Morgoth made by torturing ancient Elves. He also created Dragons and Trolls, and Morgoth even created fire itself. The more hints of Morgoth's evils that can find their way into The Rings of Power, the better. Fans appreciate the world-building that Morgoth adds, even though he's already defeated by the time of the series.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 is now streaming on Prime Video.
