“God calls each of us, like He called Moses, with a burning heart to participate in His act of salvation, to serve, to save the earth, our mother, our common home,” said Archbishop John Wong, August 31.
Archbishop John presided over the Eucharistic celebration at the launch of the third of a five-year campaign for “Protect Our Earth, Protect Our Children” (PROTEC) by the region and the Season of Creation. This year’s theme is Stop Plastic Pollution.
Concelebrating with him were the President of the Episcopal Commission Creation Justice of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, Bishop Joseph Hii, and the Spiritual Directors of the Commission for Creation Justice from the arch/dioceses of Malaysia.
Representatives of the Arch/Diocesan Creation Justice Ministries and the Federation Bishops of Asia (FABC) displayed their respective banners during the entrance procession.
The prelate began his homily by thanking all who came for the launch of PROTEC 3 and proceeded with his reflection on the selected scripture readings for the occasion.
“I believe all of us are here today not by coincidence. We were chosen by God to participate in a noble mission and I believe your hearts are burning with love for God, love for your neighbour, and love for all of God’s creation.
“The place you are standing on is a Holy Ground and it is our Mother Earth, the sacred creation of God which we temporarily occupy, and we should take care of it. But this earth suffers every day, amidst ongoing climate emergencies and the biodiversity crisis. This earth implores us to end our abuses that are leading to her destruction,” said the prelate.
The Lord hears the cries of the earth, exploited by the rich and powerful, and in His mercy and love for His creation, He will come to its rescue. Just like He commissioned Moses at the burning bush, God is calling us to be His mouth, hands, and feet to save His creation and to proclaim repentance. We must repent and modify our lifestyle and destructive system, concluded the prelate.
During the offertory, each delegate presented an item symbolising creation.
At the end of Mass, the clergy and congregation watched a video clip about pollution caused by the prolonged use of plastic materials, and the plea to stop using plastic to save our planet.
Bishop Joseph then thanked Archbishop John, Bishop Cornelius Piong, and Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom for supporting PROTEC 3. He called the faithful from the various arch/dioceses, and those in renewal movements like the Legion of Mary, the Neo Catechumenates and the Covenant Community, to fully celebrate the Season of Creation campaign now and in the succeeding years. “There is no time to lose if we are to save mankind from self-destruction” (Laudato Si’ 79).
The launch gambit for PROTEC 3 and the Season of Creation campaign was a hologram prism that Archbishop John switched on, and images of a burning bush, earth, and the PROTEC 3 logo were projected. Bishop Joseph unveiled the banner for PROTEC 3, and Fr Stephen Esquerra from Sandakan Diocese unveiled the banner for the Season of Creation Campaign.
The next day, the Season of Creation was celebrated at the FSIC Retreat Centre Pace Bene, Papar, with Mass presided over by Bishop Joseph and Fr Jojo Fung SJ.
