Parishioners from the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (CHS), and some parishioners from the Island Deanery, carried out a series of ecological activities on Merdeka Day.

These were to launch the Season of Creation (SoC) 2022 and the Protect the Earth, Protect our Children (PROTEC) Campaign Year 3. The theme for the PROTEC Campaign Year 3 is Stop Plastic Pollution. The PROTEC Campaign will go on from Sept 1, 2022 till Aug 31, 2023. This is the third of a five-year plan. Both projects were officially launched on Sept 1 in conjunction with the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.

Parish priest Fr Joachim Robert was the main celebrant, with priest-in-residence, Fr Francis Anthony, concelebrating the Mass on Aug 31.

Some of the ecological awareness activities prepared by parishioners included serving vegan food, which promotes sustainability to reduce carbon footprint. There was also a booth to calculate one’s carbon footprint based on current lifestyle choices. The results showed how many ‘earths’ it would take to sustain their current lifestyle choices. To offset or neutralise these emissions, participants made personal commitments by pledging to adopt more climate-friendly habits. The pledges were written on red pieces of paper, reflecting the Burning Bush, and tied to plants around the cafĂ©.

There were also SoC 2022 logo painting activities and moulding of herbal soaps which would later be donated to prison inmates in the Penang Diocese. This is in line with another Corporal Act of Mercy (Matt 25:36). By learning to make homemade soaps, participants are now one step closer to promoting ‘zero waste’ because there is no usage of plastic bottles or plastic wrappers.

The SoC 2022 and PROTEC Campaign Year 3 of CHS was officially launched on Sept 1 via an online prayer service.

Although it was a working day, all those involved in both projects ‘attended’ the service via Zoom. Fr Joachim launched the event with an opening prayer and later thanked all those involved in making these projects a reality.

Dr Miheka Patel, who is a senior climate consultant at a climate consultant agency in Australia said that, “Acting now is imperative to securing the wellbeing of future generations and a healthy planet. Failure to do so will lead to more severe climate hazards such as drought and floods, together with an imbalance of existing ecosystems. We need to work collaboratively as a society to protect the things we value and rely on such as human health, wildlife, food and energy.”

It is with great hope that we believe such efforts and activities will create more awareness about the importance and immediate need to preserve Mother Earth. As followers of Christ, action must supplement prayer. As members of the human race and entrusted stewards of the Earth, we are all responsible to ensure the longevity of Creation as a whole.

Much has been lost and contaminated, but there is time to preserve what we still have so that we will be able to leave a healthier and safer planet to future generations.
