Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson announced Thursday at the City Council moving he was speeding up the creation of a citizens advisory committee focused on the police force and called on council members to submit nominations.
Robinson said the committee would be an 11-member committee with each council member appointing one person and the mayor appointing four people.
Robinson said council members had until June 19 to submit nominations to his office.
Previously, Robinson said the committee wouldn't be created until October after the city held town halls on what the committee would look like and who would serve.
In 2019, after the shooting death of Tymar Crawford by a former Pensacola police officer, the city hired Cedric Alexander, a Pensacola native and a nationally recognized law enforcement expert, to conduct implicit bias and leadership training with all sworn members of the PPD.

Robinson publicly committed on Saturday that one of his appointments to the committee would be Hale Morrissette with the Pensacola Dream Defenders after a group of protesters briefly blocked traffic on Bayfront Parkway.
Initially, Robinson said Alexander would help create the advisory committee by July 2020. Last week, Robinson said the coronavirus pandemic had delayed the creation of the committee, but Alexander would be holding town halls over the summer for public input on how the committee would function.
Now, Robinson said Thursday, that committee members would be hosting those town halls.
"Once the committee is assembled, we will task the members with going into the community gathering input," Robinson said. "Once we have the input, we'll know more about the committee, what it will look like and what its roles will be."
