LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Mayor Linda Gorton held a news conference Friday afternoon to announce the creation of a new police oversight committee.
Mayor Gorton was joined alongside police chief Lawrence Weathers and council members announcing the beginning of the Accountability Review Committee.
The “after-action review group” will examine police discipline policies and procedures. The goal is to take a close look at an officer’s discipline after it has happened.
From there, they will take a look at what could have been done differently or new steps coming forward. Members for the group have not been named but the mayor has vowed it will be created fast and will include educated leaders and civilians.
The mayor says they can only do so much because if legalities. She says both the police chief and the Fraternal Order of Police are on board.
Gorton says the committee will not stop an officer from doing their job but strengthen the police force.
