Despite racing between rivals early and fanning seven-wide into the stretch, Loyalty powered home a convincing 1 1/2-length winner of the CA$175,000 Bessarabian Stakes (G2) at Woodbine. The 4-year-old Hard Spun filly completed seven furlongs over Tapeta in 1:22.27 against 12 fillies and mares.
Loyalty, owned by Gainesway Stable and LNJ Foxwoods, is trained by Josie Carroll, who won the Bessarabian for a fourth time. Kazushi Kimura kept Loyalty farther back than in other starts this season, which proved a heads-up move after pacesetter Owen's Tour Guide went a half-mile in :45.67. The top two after four furlongs faded to 11th and 13th.
Love to Shop was the only runner who was close up early that managed to still be there at the end, finishing second by a neck over 41-1 longshot Dolce Sopresa in third.
Loyalty, now 7-0-2 from 11 starts, paid $8.10 as the 3-1 favorite.
Loyalty was bred in Florida by Best A Luck Farm LLC and Godolphin LLC. She was a $270,000 purchase at the 2020 Keeneland Association September Yearling Sale.
WHAT THEY SAID
Kimura: "Last time, there were only a few horses in the front, and she was aggressive from the beginning. But today, there were so many frontrunners that fortunately we could set up behind and she was so comfortable from behind and she finished up strong."
Carroll: "I thought she was extremely tenacious today. She had every reason not to dig in, she was kind of shuffling around there a little bit, and then she pinned her ears and away she went. It's pretty exciting when you get to handle a horse like that."
Millie Girl Mows them Down in Maple Leaf
Millie Girl made it back-to-back grade 3 wins defeating 11 other fillies and mares over the 1 1/4-mile Woodbine Tapeta course in taking the CA$150,000 Maple Leaf Stakes (G3) Nov. 11.
For the ownership of Kingfield Racing Stable, Braconcrest and Apricot Valley Thoroughbreds, the 5-year-old Hard Spun mare settled five-wide and several lengths off the 64-1 early longshot leader Inventing through opening fractions of :23.69, :47.59, and 1:12.28 for the first six furlongs.
Under the confident handling of the meet's leading rider Raphael Hernandez, the five-time winning mare circled the field with a full head of steam at the top of the stretch and cruised to the wire an easy back-to-back graded-stakes winner.
