Bello says it's time to take affirmative steps to challenge the status quo of systemic, and racial inequalities here in the county. He was joined several members of the County Legislature at the Monroe County Office Building to make his announcement.
"This new department led by the newly created Chief Diversity Officer is a necessary first step forward in creating a more diverse, and inclusive county government, and insuring that Monroe County is an inclusive business partner within our community," Bello said.
He went on to say, the new department will focus on equal employment opportunities, staff development, ADA compliance, and minority and women-owned business contracts.
"These positions will be created by utilizing current vacant, but funded positions and repurposing those roles to ensure this critical function within county government is coordinated but also doesn't increase our costs," Bello said.
Tuesday's announcement was welcomed by Dr. Hank Rubin, Founding Director of The Frederick Douglass Center For Collaborative Leadership.
"I'm very enthusiastic that he's building the system. He's creating the position. It’s going to be a parallel structure to what's going on in the city. It’s the same sort of thing that's been mandated that as has been mandated by the governor apparently," Bello said.
This is a 3-month process in which the Monroe County Legislature first has to vote on it before a public hearing is held and before the Bill is ultimately signed into law.
