SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian discussed the airline's long-standing role in Salt Lake City as a crucial business hub during an interview at the Delta Center.
"To me it's a thrill — 17 years ago the name came off the building," Bastian said. "I unfortunately had no other choice to make. So, to be able to close that chapter and start a new chapter, it feels not just the right thing to do but the smart thing to do."
Bastian praised the local community's growth and strength, mentioning the area's beauty and business-friendly environment.
He said he also looked forward to the airport's expansion for travel and business.
2News anchor and reporter Brian Schnee also asked Bastian about the recent changes, ensuring loyal members will still receive top-notch treatment.
"We needed to make some choices as to how to balance the population because we're growing the assets," Bastian said. "We're building new clubs, new opportunities, new planes, new premium seating; but it's just not fast enough."
Bastian explained how he received multiple personal letters expressing how their members were hurt by the recent changes.
"We made changes. We reflected. Those with the lifetime loyalty, we reduced the qualification tiers," he said. "I think we're going to come out in a in a good place, there's still been some people that unfortunately were impacted but those that are most loyal to Delta, those that spend the most amount of money and time with Delta are being taken care."
He also mentioned exciting additions like Delta 360 and Delta Studios at the Delta Center, aiming to improve the customer experience.
At the end of his interview with Schnee, Bastian thanked Delta's loyal customers, promising continued exceptional service.
