Roses for Debra and Loyalty , two sprinters with near-flawless synthetic records, square off against 10 other females Sept. 18 in the 6 1/2-furlong Presque Isle Masters (G2).
The Masters is the top stakes race of the meet at Presque Isle Downs, an Erie, Pa., track whose only racing surface is Tapeta. Since its inaugural running in 2007, the race has been won by eventual Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winners Informed Decision , Musical Romance and Groupie Doll .
With current Breeders' Cup host sites having dirt and not synthetic tracks, the race has taken on less importance in recent years as an essential Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint prep—though last year Masters fourth-place finisher Caravel went on to win on the grass at Keeneland in the Franklin Stakes (G3T) before upsetting males in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T).
John O'Meara and Cheyenne Stables' Roses for Debra could seemingly develop into a Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint candidate with a successful late summer and early fall. She is unbeaten in four starts this year, all on grass for trainer Christophe Clement, topped by recent stakes victories at Saratoga Race Course in the Caress Stakes (G3) and Smart N Fancy Stakes.

A Pennsylvania-bred 4-year-old gray daughter of Liam's Map , she raced four times on Tapeta last year at Presque Isle Downs for O'Meara and then-trainer Michelle Brafford. She crossed the wire first in all those races, though she was disqualified from her initial start for interference. One of those wins at Presque Isle came in the Malvern Rose Stakes, in which she zipped 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.87, just .3 off the track record.
Later in the year, she raced on dirt, finishing fourth in her final start of 2022 in an allowance optional claiming race at Keeneland.
Four-time Eclipse Award-winning rider Irad Ortiz Jr. comes down from his New York base for the mount on the 7-5 morning-line favorite on Monday.
Gainesway Stable and LNJ Foxwoods' Loyalty has just a single loss in seven starts on Tapeta while racing exclusively at Woodbine—a third in the 2022 Bessarabian Stakes (G2). This year the 4-year-old daughter of Hard Spun is 2-for-2, taking an allowance optional claimer and the 6 1/2-furlong Hendrie Stakes (G3) in 1:15.61.
Her Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Josie Carroll won the Masters in 2017 with Ami's Mesa .
Woodbine's leading rider Kazushi Kimura is aboard the 5-2 second choice on the morning line.
Other Threats
- Marissa's Lady is perfect in two starts at Presque Isle this summer, capturing an allowance optional claiming race and the Satin and Lace Stakes, the local prep for Monday's race.
- Accomplished Girl is 2-1-0 in five starts for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., who took the Masters last year with Arties Princess. Last out on Sept. 2, she ran second in a second-level allowance optional claimer at Kentucky Downs.
- Opening Buzz , a dual stakes winner on Tapeta at Turfway Park, moves from grass to synthetic, a surface on which she is 4-for-5. Her only synthetic defeat came in a route.
