PEORIA (25News Now) - Illinois may have a new state flag in the future.
Governor JB Pritzker Monday signed a bill that would create the Illinois Flag Commission with the purpose of exploring creating a new state flag and developing designs.
That commission will recommend to the General Assembly whether or not to replace the current flag - the state emblem on a white flag.
By September 2024, ten flag designs will be selected and reported to the General Assembly by December.
“Throughout our 205-year history, Illinois has boasted two official state flags—and it may be time we create a new one that exemplifies the values of our great state,” Pritzker said.
Illinois has had two previous state flags. One being adopted by State Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution and becoming law on July 6th, 1915. The second being initiated by Gov. Ogilvie and becoming law on July 1st, 1970.
The new bill creates a similar committee to the one in 1970.
“With the creation of the next flag of our state, we are ushering in a new era that will represent every Illinoisan and commemorate how far we have come so we may go even further together.” Said Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton.
