Suns Forward Kevin Durant Enjoying World of Content Creation - Sports Illustrated

Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant is many things.

People mostly know him as one of the top scorers in NBA history. Accolades stuff a resume that will watch him go into the Basketball Hall of Fame upon first opportunity. His presence on the court - even as he continues to age - is something that will be talked about for far after his playing days are over.

Yet it's his presence off the court that Durant has really molded to a personal level. He's not a black-and-white athlete away from the game: His passion for things such as music and video games are well established.

You can add content creation to that list, too. Durant initially launched Boardroom in 2019 and has seen that grow over its short existence. His latest endeavor - The ETC's With Kevin Durant - is a podcast that allows Durant the ability to construct himself in a creative light.

In an exclusive interview with The Athletic's Tashan Reed, Durant spoke on wearing the content creator hat.

“I was always interested in the process of creating something, creating content and sending it out to the world. I tried to understand what it takes to create something from the ground up and to send it off," said Durant. "It was tougher than what I thought. I was just glad I was able to take a peek behind the curtain.”

Phoenix's superstar says the origin for wanting to create content comes from basketball itself.

“There is a unique story to an athlete and the journey as a player that a lot of people may not know." he said. "As time goes on, you start to understand the journey of an athlete on the floor and in their sport, but now you start to see the other side of the business. I think that’s what people are really intrigued by. Living it every day, I thought it was easy for me to tell that story.”

With nearly 35 million followers between his Twitter and Instagram account, Durant's audience is large. He knows that people - just like he was growing up - simply wanted to know more about their favorite players than what a quick postgame interview could offer.

“I wanted to tell my experience in real time to the people that wanted to know about it, basically,” Durant said. “That’s what I wanted as a fan of the game: I wanted to hear my favorite players and coaches and people talk about their experience. So, it’s something I just wanted to get into. Whoever was following me, I just wanted to give an in-depth look at how I’m feeling at the time. I don’t want to get too deep into the team dynamics, but giving an idea of how we go through this life. I wanted to give that to the fan base.”

As content creation becomes more accessible for everybody, perhaps we'll see more athletes such as Durant shouldering that load on top of their normal duties as a player.
