Many travelers use Vrbo to book vacation rentals and get more spacious and private accommodations at a similar (or better) rate than hotels. The only problem is not earning loyalty rewards, but that’s changing now that the Vrbo One Key loyalty program is coming.
What Is Vrbo One Key?
One Key™ is a combined loyalty program between Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com. It’s launching in mid-2023, allowing users to earn OneKeyCash™ on eligible bookings across all three platforms. It will launch in the United States first.
Currently, only Expedia and Hotels.com offer loyalty programs that operate separately from each other. Both programs are merging into One Key later in 2023.
The One Key rewards program isn’t accepting membership applications yet, but it will be free to join once the doors open.
This loyalty program launch is one of the latest innovations from Expedia Group to maximize travel bookings. For example, the Expedia App now uses ChatGPT to research travel options, and there is also an Expedia ChatGPT plugin.
Earning Rewards
You can earn OneKeyCash rewards points on these travel-related purchases:
- Vacation rental bookings through Vrbo
- Eligible stays on Hotels.com
- Flights, hotels, car rentals, cruises, experiences and packages on Expedia
Lodging, activities, packages and car rentals will earn 2% back, while flight purchases only receive 0.2% back.
One Key elite members can earn from 50% to 200% bonus points on bookings. These rewards are in addition to any travel loyalty program and credit card points earned.
Points for most “Pay Now” bookings arrive within three days after completed travel. The deposit time is up to 45 days for “Pay Later” and Vrbo bookings, but it can require waiting up to 90 days.
Redeeming Rewards
OneKeyCash rewards can only be redeemed for “Pay Now” bookings and eligible vacation rentals with U.S. dollars. So, it’s possible to redeem these rewards on Expedia, Hotels.com or Vrbo.
When redeeming these rewards for flights, it must cover the entire ticket cost, including taxes and fees. The rewards balance cannot be used for optional extras like checked bags or seat assignments.
OneKey Loyalty Tiers
This loyalty program also includes several membership tiers. Initially, One Key will absorb the existing Expedia Rewards and Hotel.com loyalty programs, so a limited-time status match can be offered once the program goes live.
There are four OneKey membership levels:
- Blue
- Silver (50% earnings bonus)
- Gold (100% bonus points)
- Platinum (200% bonus points)
Members can also be eligible for member-only discounts. No additional loyalty benefits have been publicly announced yet.
Travel purchases made in the first half of 2023 with Expedia Rewards or Hotels.com will help travelers qualify for elite status when One Key launches. The qualification period is each calendar year (January 1 to December 31), not your membership anniversary date, to have the elite status for the following year.
Final Thoughts
The One Key loyalty program is an exciting program that finally lets travelers earn travel rewards from qualifying Vrbo bookings. It’s also possible to combine rewards with Expedia and Hotels.com purchases which helps boost loyalty for these travel booking partners while making it easier to maximize just about any travel purchase beyond credit card points.
