The impacts of climate change continue to challenge our complacency. We are shown each day that we are deeply interconnected with the rest of creation. This can help us to become more appreciative of the beauty and the sacredness of brother sun and sister moon. St. Francis of Assisi realized this way back in the thirteenth century. He was a contemplative who knew how blessed we are when we care for our common home. Our heightened consciousness can help us to more deeply appreciate the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Romans: “We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now” (Romans 8:22). As we groan for our redemption, we can also pray for the redemption of mother Earth who longs to be freed from the corruption of environmental devastation.

The Rev. Gerry McKeon, S.J. - Loyola Jesuit Community.
