Minecraft is well-known for its impressive builds, but one recent player creation is a literal work of art. A player shared their survival build of the iconic "Pillars of Creation" photograph taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. While the creation doesn't literally reach the stars, the creativity is certainly out of this world.
Most observers are well aware of Minecraft's reputation as a creative paradise. Players can go into the sandbox's peaceful creative mode and build to their heart's desire, recreating locations from the real world or fiction inside the blank canvas that is Minecraft. For instance, one player showed off a massive build Minecraft that recreated the planet Tattooine from the Star Wars movies. It's quite rare that large-scale builds are done in Minecraft's survival mode, where players have to contend with enemies who might destroy their build at any moment. That was the case for this player's epic build.
YouTuber Garden of Eden showed their build, which is a recreation of the famous "Pillars of Creation" photograph. The photograph is actually a massive grid of maps, in a 16x16 configuration. As Garden of Eden explained, the map required him to place over 4 million blocks in order to get the shading right on the map. Placing those blocks took Garden of Eden around one month to bring this beautiful painting to life. The fact that it was done in Survival mode, where a Creeper could blow up a group of those blocks and completely reset Garden of Eden's progress, makes the build all the more impressive. And, spending a month on one build shows Garden of Eden's dedication, even if there are some Minecraft builds that took even longer to finish. Garden of Eden notes that this might be the largest map art made in Minecraft, but that claim cannot be verified.
As far as fan creations go, not only is Garden of Eden's map art impressive for the effort and detail that went into creating it, but also for what it shows. The "Pillars of Creation" depicts so-called elephant trunks of stars and cosmic dust in the Eagle Nebula. Depicting a scene nearly 7,000 light-years from the Earth, the image is often used to convey just how small humans are on the cosmic scale. The fact that this build took over 4 million blocks may not be as massive as 7,000 light-years, but it does at least show some appreciation for the scale of the original photo.
Now that Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs Part 2 update has been released, players are getting to explore the massive creations generated by their world. The Caves & Cliffs Part 2 update brought the massive Dripstone and Lush Cave biomes to the game, giving veterans more areas to explore. However, even those massive caves don't compare to the scale of the "Pillars of Creation."
Minecraft is available on PC, Android, iOS, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
