Pokémon: How Arceus Created the World - Sinnoh's Creation Myth Explained - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Game Freak doesn't shy away from filling the Pokémon games with tons of lore and world-building. Regions like Alola and Johto are rich with cultural inspirations that often shape the story of the adventures within them. Without a doubt, the Sinnoh region has some of the most well-defined and important history in the entire series. Of its lore contributions, its Creation Myth is certainly the most essential.

This story was first introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, playing into the region's ancient history. The myth itself also builds up the game's Legendary Creation Trio along with the Mythic Pokémon Arceus. Given that Pokémon Legends: Arceus is releasing soon and very well may expand on the lore behind the Sinnoh region, here's a quick rundown on everything that fans know about the Sinnoh Creation Myth.

The myth is also known as The Original Story and is depicted in Sinnoh's Canalave Library. To paraphrase, the story states that the universe started as a swirling pool of chaos that would eventually create an egg. The egg would hatch the deity-like Pokémon Arceus who would then shape the chaos of the universe into Dialga and Palkia. Arceus would, according to the myth, create three final Pokémon in the form of the Lake Spirits.

Palkia, Dialga, And Giratina In Pokemon

Dialga and Palkia would create matter, the Lake Spirits would create spirit and Arceus would sleep once the universe finally formed. This version of The Original Story leaves out the third member of the Creation Trio, Giratina, who was either purposely wiped from history or was simply forgotten over time. In either case, there is a version of The Original Story that Sinnoh's Champion Cynthia tells the player that incorporates Giratina.

The revised version of the Sinnoh Creation Myth notes that Giratina's creation happened alongside Dialga and Palkia's, with Giratina representing antimatter. Giratina's role in the creation of the world is much less clear, though Cynthia does theorize that Giratina is the opposite of Dialga and Palkia, and is their equal in power. Cynthia also suggests that the Lake Spirits in the original myth are actually also meant to be Dialga, Palkia and Giratina.

Arceus is never actually named directly in the myth and hasn't even been obtainable in a main series Pokémon game outside of special promotional events. Yet, there is a secret character that the player can encounter in Pokémon Platinum if they've managed to acquire Arceus. A hiker will appear to tell the player about plates, the items used to change Arceus' type, and he will also tell them how Arceus factors into the Sinnoh Creation Myth in slightly more detail.

The hiker speaks about Arceus as a myth, like everyone else in Sinnoh, but he does relay some information that no one else in the region seems to know. He conveys to the player that all Pokémon are actually fragments of Arceus' original form when it created the world and that the plates that alter its form came into existence at the same time as Arceus. The theory that all Pokémon are just small fragments of Arceus is referenced later in the series, which means this may be more than just the hiker's own theory.

The Sinnoh Creation Myth may be one of Pokémon's biggest mysteries, both to players and to in-game characters as well. It's clear that the version most commonly known has been altered over time and has lost important references to Pokémon like Giratina and Arceus. There's also plenty of questions left open, like where exactly the Lake Spirits factor in and what Giratina's role in shaping the world was.

Part of the Sinnoh Creation Myth's charm is this natural uncertainty that inspires a sense of discovery. Players have been theorizing every since Diamond and Pearl released about the further implications of this Creation Myth, and the further development of Pokémon's lore has only deepened the curiosity of fans. With Pokémon Legends: Arceus and the generation four remakes on the horizon, perhaps fans will finally begin to start piecing together how the Pokémon universe truly came to be.
