US President Joe Biden will sign the creation of a new federal holiday on Thursday to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
June 16th Independence Day is held every year on June 19th.
The holiday is the day of 1865, when Union soldiers announced freedom to a group of enslaved blacks in Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
June 16 is already a holiday in many US states.
It joined the other 10 federal holidays and was first added as Martin Luther King Junior Day became a holiday in 1983.
The law for creating holidays will arrive at Biden’s desk after being approved by the Senate on Tuesday with unanimous consent and passing the House of Representatives with 415-14 votes on Wednesday.
