One Epic Paint Bash Brings Community Together For Live Mural Creation

HAMILTON – More than a dozen creative minds congregated along Downtown Hamilton’s Market Street for one purpose: to make art. Ten lead artists, six assistant artists, and two coordinators were involved in the recent creation of ten new murals that now line a 250’ stretch of the George McDulin Memorial Parking Garage. This collaborative effort took significant planning, approval from city administration on the designs, and funding to cover the costs for supplies and entertainment. Some of the artists went to work as early as 7am Friday morning and continued through midnight to ensure their piece would be ready for Saturday evening’s One Epic Paint Bash event.

While each of the ten murals expresses the different, unique visions of the artists, they all follow the same color scheme using only obstinate orange, white, and black. “Obstinate orange is an electric color”, said David Stark, event coordinator. “The whole event is about positive vibes. Other existing murals in the garage have that color incorporated in them and the orange really compliments the “Taking Flight” mural that hangs above the garage.

Danielle Martin, one of the lead artists, used this project as an opportunity to bring comfort to others during this pandemic. “The lion and lamb symbolize peace while the sunrise represents a new day”, said Martin. The recent times have been chaotic so it brings positivity”. Her mural entitled Lion and Lamb can be viewed in the garage nearest to N. Third Street.

This collaborative mural project was one of several recent beautification initiatives organized in the area surrounding Artspace, a live/work apartment space for artists. They hope to do additional projects in the near future including the installation of small sculptures along the alleyway near Artspace recently designated “Artist Alley”. The total cost of the One Epic Paint Bash is estimated around $7,500-$8,000 with Hamilton’s 17Strong being a major sponsor. Donations to Artspace ensure that they are able to continue to provide free events for the community. More information on supporting them can be found at: https://ift.tt/2Y5aVNV
