Stopmotion Trailer

"Do you want to hear the next bit of the story?" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for Stopmotion, a very strange and peculiar indie horror film from English filmmaker Robert Morgan. This first premiered at both Fantastic Fest 2023 and the Sitges Film Festival last year, where I originally saw it. Yes, there is stop-motion animation work in this, though it's really a story about a woman who is creating a film. Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother, embarks upon the creation of a film that becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella's mind starts to fracture, the characters in her project take on a life of their own. Then it gets really weird! "An unnerving display of psychological horror reminiscent of Censor (2021)." IFC also adds that this features "truly unforgettable, Švankmajer-esque animation." Aisling Franciosi stars as Ella, along with Stella Gonet, Tom York, and James Swanton. This is a gnarly trailer, with some frightening editing that builds to the end. Take a look.

Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Robert Morgan's Stopmotion, direct from IFC's YouTube:

Stopmotion Poster

Ella (Aisling Franciosi) is a stop-motion animator whose mother, whom she used to have a complicated relationship, has recently passed away. She throws herself into the filming of a macabre puppet movie, which becomes the stage for her internal grief. But before long, the puppets begin to take on a life of their own, causing Ella to question her own sanity and, even more disturbingly, the power of the imagination. Stopmotion is directed by English genre filmmaker Robert Morgan, making his feature directorial debut with this project, after many different short films and a segment in "ABCs of Death 2" previously. The script is written by Robin King and Robert Morgan. It's produced by Alain de la Mata and Christopher Granier-Deferre. This initially premiered at Fantastic Fest 2023 and Sitges + London as well. IFC Films will debut Morgan's Stopmotion in select US theaters starting February 23rd, 2024 this winter. Anyone intrigued?
