Mass Effect 2 introduced squad loyalty missions, which were designed to not only guarantee that squadmates were loyal to Commander Shepard and their cause, but that they were psychologically prepared for the suicide mission they all agreed to undertake. This meant tying up loose ends in their lives that might distract them from the mission, and Samara's loose end had haunted her for 400 years. In fact, it wasn't just that the mission she was on was important to her as a Justicar, but as a mother.
The Justicar's target just so happened to be her own daughter, Morinth, a dangerous Ardat-Yakshi who had murdered countless victims in pursuit of her own power. In order to gain Samara's loyalty, she asked Shepard to help her trap Morinth so she could carry out justice and set her mind at ease. When Shepard met Morinth, however, they were presented with a difficult choice. Did they stay loyal to Samara and help her complete her task, or would they side with the alluring Ardat-Yakshi who promised absolute loyalty if Shepard would kill her mother for her? Much like Thane's loyalty mission, there are no combat situations.
Mass Effect 2 Mission: Tracking a Killer Walkthrough
After Samara opens up to Shepard about the full details on her mission (during which Shepard can gain +2 Paragon for noting that she sounds dangerous or +2 Renegade for assessing that Morinth sounds like Samara) and asks for their help in tracking down and killing the Ardat-Yakshi. Agreeing to help her nets +2 Paragon, and saying they will think about it triggers +2 Renegade. A further +2 Paragon is available if Shepard tells Samara they are sorry about their daughter, or +2 Renegade for insisting she should have told them.
When ready to start the mission, head to Omega with Samara, where EDI will direct Shepard to speak with Aria T'Loak in the Afterlife club. Aria will tell them about Morinth's latest victim, a young human woman named Nef who lived in the apartments with her mother. Go to the apartments, which are located near the quarantine zone where Mordin was recruited, and speak with Nef's mother, Diana. Ask Diana about Nef, gaining +2 Paragon for saying, "I believe you," when Diana says her daughter was murdered, and another +2 Paragon points for telling her, "I'm on your side." +2 Renegade points can be earned in this scene instead by choosing the "yes" response when asked if they are one of Aria's people.
Question her about Nef, asking about her behaviors and personality. When Shepard asks if they can look around Nef's room for clues, Diana will start to cry, prompting a Paragon interrupt during which Shepard can gain +5 points for comforting her with promises of finding her daughter's killer. Not using the interrupt and not making any promises instead offers +2 Renegade. Diana gives Shepard permission to search Nef's room for clues, and inside they find the girl's holo-diary. Listen to each of the three entries to discover important clues about Morinth that will aid Shepard in conversation with her.
Clues include Morinth's appreciation for an Elcor artist named Forta, a popular vid called Vaenia and the drug Hallex, which heightens the senses and increases euphoria in those dosed with it. They also find out that the password to the VIP area of Afterlife is Jaruut's name. When Samara details Morinth's thrill with the hunt, Shepard can grab +2 Paragon by noting that she sounds like the perfect predator or +2 Renegade for saying they can't wait to meet her.
Mass Effect 2 Mission: The Bait Walkthrough
After leaving the apartment, head to the back door for the VIP lounge of Afterlife. Drop Jaruut's name to get in, then strategize with Samara before separating. Both agree that the best way to lure in Morinth is to use Shepard as bait. Shepard needs to make an impression in the club to attract Morinth's attention, and there are multiple options to gain morality points by completing tasks around the club. The first +2 Renegade points are offered when a human asks loudly for tickets to a band called Expel 10 because he wants to impress an Asari and Shepard tells him to get away.
Walk through the club and complete various tasks that display Commander Shepard's confidence, like challenging the Krogan insulting humans at the bar to step outside for a fight, stopping the would-be Turian muggers or either convincing the bartender to dole a round of drinks on the house or buying a round for everyone. Note that if Shepard does not do enough to impress Morinth during this period, she will get bored and leave Omega, making it impossible to complete Samara's mission and earn her loyalty.
Impressed, Morinth will invite Shepard to have a drink with them, presenting multiple dialogue options that incorporate things Shepard learned from Nef's holo-journal and that are designed to engage Morinth enough that she will invite Shepard back to her apartment. Talk with her about travel, music, art and videos in any order, choosing responses that display confidence, excitement and passion. There is one response in every dialogue option that will decrease her interest, so choose carefully, otherwise she will get bored and leave, making Samara's mission incomplete.
Mass Effect 2: Should You Save Morinth or Samara?
When Morinth is sufficiently interested, she will invite Shepard back to her apartment, where they can take a look at the items in her room to prompt dialogue from Morinth and even scan for an assault rifle damage upgrade. Sit with Morinth on the sofa, where she will begin using her power to seduce Shepard, making it more and more difficult for them to move away from her. There is a very high Paragon/Renegade response that allows Shepard to deny her seduction, but even if they don't have enough to do it, Samara will come to their aid and a fight to the death between mother and daughter ensues.
During the battle, Morinth appeals to Shepard, promising to take Samara's place on their team if they kill her mother instead of her. This is probably the most honest thing she says during the entire encounter, and if Renegade Shepard prefers the company of an Ardat-Yakshi, they can instead help Morinth kill Samara and bring her back to the Normandy, where she will pretend to be Samara for the remainder of the game. Choosing to aid Morinth over Samara will net Shepard +45 Renegade points, and Morinth's loyalty is instantly earned.
Helping Samara finish her task grants +30 Paragon points, and an additional +2 for asking her afterward if she is okay. Back on the Normandy, Shepard can engage Samara for further conversation, earning +2 Paragon if Morinth was killed by telling Samara not to be fatalistic. If Morinth escaped, Shepard can apologize for +2 Paragon, or +2 Renegade for saying the mission was a waste of time. Allowing Morinth to escape will not secure Samara's loyalty, no matter how hard Shepard tried to carry out the task with her.
