What is Holistic & what is the Holistic Idea of Creation? -2 - Economic Times

1. Holistic Management is for Creating the Shrestha: Society needs the Shrestha, enlightened citizens and leaders, who are role models of society. For the vast majority of us, Schooling is meant for getting a job, a career, a vocation. Mere IQ-academic has given us selfish leaders and citizens, wanting power for self-gratification. Holistic vision, if imparted during education and training, will inspire us to be the Shrestha.

2. Why should we be Shrestha, good, ethical? If we are made aware of the holistic idea of creation, we will see that everyone is ultimately seeking for Mukti, Ananda, Freedom, happiness. The Shrestha, will be those who try to understand the holistic idea of creation and get the intellectual conviction that doing whatever we want is not the path to attain the goal of freedom. They will strive to follow, values, discipline, commitment to respective duties, kartavyaswadharma, with the conviction that, duty alone is the path that guarantees freedom; since fulfilling our swadharma is in ‘sur’, in harmony, with the whole plan of creation.

3. So, what is our Holistic Identity in Creation? As human-beings, Jiva-atma, we are unique. We alone have a developed intellect, buddhi, which can think, deliberate and has the freedom to choose its course of action, good or bad; whereas other beings act instinctively and are therefore not responsible for their actions. Since we’ve a Buddhi, and freedom to think, we become responsible for our actions. Actions like fulfilling our swadharma, unselfishness, care for others, aka virtuous, ethical, righteous conduct, etc. that take us towards feeling of ‘oneness’ with the whole creation are ‘good’ and take us towards Mukti, Ananda. Selfish actions are not in harmony, ‘asuric’; ‘bad’. They result in pain, misery, etc. Governance, training, education, have to give us this conviction and establish us in self-development practices to build the ability to focus on fulfilling our swadharma.

4. Holistic Vision: Our ignorance is the feeling that we’re just an individual, unconnected with creation. We are unaware that it is Life, Consciousness, aka Spirit, Self, Divinity or Kingdom of God within that makes us a Living-being. So, what exactly is this Life, Consciousness? The Creation itself is pure one, indivisible, Consciousness; though it is appearing to us as this creation with its many separate individual entities. The goal of life and creation is to once again ‘unite’ (Yoga) with our Consciousness; or, ‘regain’, (Latin meaning of religion) our oneness with Consciousness.

It is because of this Consciousness, atman, or Life within, that we are ‘aware’, ‘knower’, ‘conscious’, ‘experiencer’, etc. It is Life within us that is witness to everything that I think, speak and do. It is the storehouse of data within mind, Chitta, where this witnessed-record is stored and becomes available on the Day of Judgment. And this Life is said to be Ubiquitous, Pervasive, Universal, Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent. All religions claim that their God has all these properties.

5. What is the holistic purpose of Life? The purpose of human beings is to experience the highest Perfection, Salvation, Mukti or Freedom from all pain and misery, Nirvana, Heaven, etc. All these imply experiencing Consciousness per se; so, the purpose of our daily working and living will be to grow in unselfishness and love and oneness with more and more, fulfilling our swadharma, till we feel one with the whole creation as undivided Consciousness.

6. What is the cause of birth? We have died with a mind carrying many unfulfilled cravings (vasanas), desires, and the unfulfilled consequences of our good or bad actions, called samskaras, mindset, characteristics. We have to take birth to fulfil them. And this is possible because when we died our mind remained with us which has witnessed and recorded all these in the store house, Chitta, of our mind.

7. How do we get Freedom, ‘Mukti’, from birth and death? Mukti is only attainable by experiencing creation and Consciousness in its totality; expanding the mind to experience that the whole creation is our family. Only a pure mind is capable of such an experience. So, while living and before dying our mind has to be made pure, i.e. without any cravings. So, our attempt while living must be to purify the mind thru’ prayers, meditation, worship, being virtuous, fulfilling our duties etc. according to our respective faiths.

8. What’s the connection between Birth and our cravings? We know we’re all different from our very birth. As are our craving and actions, samskaras, so is our birth; where, in what circumstances we’re born all depends on our cravings. If cravings are asur-like, we are born there and have to continue our efforts to become sur-like, in harmony with creation and realize our oneness with the whole.

9. Why is there sorrow in our life? Greed, fear, selfishness, etc. are cause of wrong actions which then lead to miseries. God creates the universe. We create sorrows and happiness by our selfish thoughts and actions, which are not in harmony with creation.

Conclusion – Holistic Management of our affairs in Families, Organizations and in Governance alone can guarantee that we fulfill our respective swadharma and run our lives and affairs in harmony with creation and create a culture of simple living and high thinking and a work culture of efficiency and effectiveness; focused on satisfying the needs of society not on arousing greed and ostentation.
