BRISTOL – Bristol City Council held a special meeting Monday where it approved a procedural measure for the creation of solar structures at the 685 Lake Ave. landfill and the addition of 40 new body cameras for the Bristol Police Department.
The meeting was held to address close deadlines for projects needing approval from the council.
“The project is in a place right now where we’re trying to vet incentives so we can proceed with the project,” said Corey Lesniak, C-Tec Solar director of operations. “I’m asking the council to help me with an option agreement for the leasing and licensing of a portion of that landfill so we can proceed with our incentive application with Eversource.”
C-Tec Solar wants to build a two megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant on the landfill.
Councilman Sebastian Panioto asked if this would be only constructed on a portion of the landfill or if there would be opportunity to expand.
Bristol Public Works Director Ray Rogozinski said the solar structure would be limited to only a portion of the landfill as there are steep slopes at the location.
“We wouldn’t install the solar panels on the slope portion so we really have a minimum area where it is level and on top of that we use a portion of the landfill as a processing area and that area won’t be affected as part of this project,” he said.
Lesniak said he did not know off hand how many panels would be installed but that each one measured at 500 kilowatts.
Council approved the motion with some discussion for future leasing options in the future.
“Due to meet the police accountability bill, we have to expand some of our programs,” said Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould. “Any vehicles assigned to the police department that are outside of the dashboard camera, the operator has to be outfitted with a body-worn camera. We will be expanding that program that we currently have in place so that all of us have body cameras so we can operate our vehicles in accordance with the new law.”
All members voted in favor of the measure for 40 new Axon police body cameras.
