Mass Effect 2: How to Secure Thane's Loyalty | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Each of the 12 squadmates Shepard picks up in Mass Effect 2 has an individual side mission they will ask Shepard to help them complete sometime during the course of the story. These missions, while optional, help make each character fully committed to Shepard's cause, increasing their chances of survival during the endgame Suicide Mission. The Loyalty missions across the Mass Effect trilogy tend to be some of the most enjoyable side missions and give Shepard a chance to get to know and bond with their crew. They also provide additional lore to the story and serve as trigger points for some romances. For most squadmates in Mass Effect 2, it is simply enough for Shepard to complete the mission, regardless of actions taken or choices made during the experience. Some squadmates' missions can be failed, however, depending on Shepard's actions and choices. Thane Krios' Loyalty mission is one of those with a fail condition.

Thane's Loyalty mission, called Thane: Sins of the Father, is one of a few in Mass Effect 2 that are considered No Combat, meaning Shepard and their squad won't face any hostile enemies. Instead, they will need to complete tasks successfully and within a given time or risk failure. Thane's mission centers on his son, Kolyat, who has turned to a career as a hitman, following the footsteps of his father. Shepard and Thane will need to stop Kolyat from carrying out his mission. If Shepard allows Kolyat to kill his target and flee the Citadel, they will lose Thane's Loyalty. Here's how to successfully complete Thane's Loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2.

How to Complete Thane's Loyalty Mission Successfully in Mass Effect 2

Thane reunites with his son Kolyat in a tearful confrontation during the Sins of the Father mission in Mass Effect 2

Players unlock Thane's Loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2 after the mission on Horizon, and often after the mission to the Derelict Collector Vessel. His is usually the last of all companion Loyalty missions to trigger. Yeoman Kelly Chambers will alert Shepard that Thane wishes to speak to them in Life Support on the Crew Deck. Shepard can head down there and learn that Thane's son has accepted a job as an assassin, likely following in his father's footsteps, and that Thane intends to stop him before he can go down such a dark path.

Thane: Sins of the Father takes place on the Citadel. Shepard will need to bring Thane as a squadmate to open the mission; it will not appear if Thane is not in the party. They will work with Commander Bailey, the C-Sec commanding officer in Zakera Ward, to complete this mission. Shepard and Thane will question a criminal named Mouse, who was working with Kolyat, and will interrogate a powerful man named Elias Kelham who ordered the hit. Eventually, they will learn Kolyat's target, a turian politician called Talid.

At this point, Shepard and Thane will split up. Shepard will need to follow Talid from the catwalks above the ward and provide updates about his location to Thane each time he changes position. Losing sight of Talid for too long will give Kolyat an opportunity to kill him and flee. If Talid dies and Kolyat gets away, the mission ends, and Thane will not be Loyal.

Shepard should follow Talid closely. He is easily spotted thanks to his krogan bodyguard. There will be four points where Talid will stop and Shepard will need to select Update Thane when it pops up to give him the new position. After the last stop, outside a nightclub near another group of krogan, Shepard will run into a stockroom attendant and need to get around him either by using Charm/Intimidate dialogue or a Renegade interrupt. This marks the end of the portion of the mission that can be failed. As long as Shepard never lost sight of Talid, they will be able to stop Kolyat in time.

Regardless of whether Shepard convinces Bailey to let Kolyat perform community service, let Kolyat work privately for C-Sec, or send Kolyat to prison at the end of the mission, Thane's Loyalty will be secured. There is no way for Shepard to lose his Loyalty later. He will now be available as a romance option for a female Shepard in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3.
